Beverwykella (Beverwykella) is a genus of fungi belonging to the group of deuteromycetes. Often acting as a saprotroph, this pathogen can exhibit parasitic activity under specific environmental conditions, colonizing various plant species and leading to necrotic lesions, particularly when the host plant is stressed or weakened.
The disease caused by this fungus typically manifests as localized tissue decay. As a conidial fungus, it reproduces through spores that are easily disseminated by wind, splash irrigation, or contaminated tools. The mycelium invades plant tissues, often causing chlorosis and subsequent necrosis in the infected areas.
Vegetable and ornamental crops grown in greenhouses are the most susceptible to this fungus. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for the rapid development of the pathogen. It often gains entry to the host through mechanical injuries or tissues damaged by other biotic or abiotic factors.
Symptoms include the appearance of brownish or grayish spots on leaves and stems. These spots may expand over time, leading to significant loss of photosynthetic surface area. Under high-humidity conditions, a visible layer of sporulation may appear on the necrotic patches, which serves as a primary diagnostic feature.
Prevention and management are centered on maintaining strict cultural practices to inhibit fungal growth. Recommended strategies include:
- proper sanitation and removal of infected plant debris;
- regulating humidity to prevent prolonged leaf wetness;
- ensuring adequate ventilation in greenhouse environments;
- selecting disease-resistant varieties and maintaining optimal soil fertility.
