Biddulphiales are a group of centric diatoms that, while often found in aquatic ecosystems, present a specific challenge in modern hydroponic farming and aquaculture. They are characterized by complex silica-based cell walls. In an agricultural context, they function as a competitive biological agent that can disrupt the equilibrium of water-based cultivation systems.

These organisms act as opportunistic colonizers rather than traditional pathogens. They primarily impact crops by consuming nutrients intended for the plants and forming dense bio-films on root surfaces. This layer blocks essential gas exchange for the roots and can lead to secondary infections caused by bacteria or fungi taking advantage of the weakened plant state.

Signs of their presence include a visible brown or rusty film appearing on pipes, irrigation emitters, and the root zone of submerged plants. Crops may show signs of yellowing or stunted development due to nutrient competition. Furthermore, the water may appear turbid, and fluctuations in pH levels are often reported by farm operators.

Conditions favorable for Biddulphiales include high light intensity, warm water temperatures, and elevated levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the nutrient solution. These conditions facilitate rapid cell division. In hydroponic setups, the lack of competing organisms and high nutrient availability make such environments ideal for the proliferation of these diatoms.

Management and prevention focus on eliminating light exposure within pipes and nutrient tanks, as diatoms rely on photosynthesis. Regular cleaning of irrigation systems and the installation of UV sterilization units are the most effective preventive measures. Controlling the concentration of nutrients and maintaining optimal water temperatures can significantly reduce the risk of massive outbreaks.
