The primary hosts for this fungus are various species of the Pinus genus, specifically Pinus sylvestris. The pathogen tends to impact needles from previous growing seasons, which can lead to a visible reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the entire tree canopy.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of long, narrow, dark brown lesions on the needles. As the fungus matures, it produces characteristic elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) that erupt through the needle surface, releasing spores to propagate the infection further throughout the forest stand.
