Pine needle cast is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Bifusella pini. This fungus belongs to the group of needle blight diseases affecting various pine species. The pathogen survives in the fallen needles, where it develops its reproductive structures, releasing spores that can be dispersed by wind to infect healthy needles during the following seasons.

The primary host plants for this fungus include pine seedlings in forest nurseries, young plantations, and suppressed trees in dense stands. The disease is highly opportunistic, often attacking pines that are already under stress due to poor site conditions, nutrient deficiencies, or competition for sunlight.

The symptoms of Bifusella pini infection typically begin as yellowing of the needles, which eventually transition into a distinct reddish-brown or dark brown color. As the infection progresses, small, elongated black fruiting bodies appear on the needle surface. The affected needles die prematurely and are cast from the tree, leading to sparse foliage.
