The fungus Bipolaris incurvata is the causal agent of a specific leaf spot disease that primarily attacks coconut palms (Cocos nucifera). It is classified as an anamorphic fungus and represents a significant pathological threat, particularly to nursery seedlings and young plantations in tropical environments.
The pathogen targets the leaves of the coconut palm, infecting plants of various ages. However, the most severe economic damage is observed in nurseries, where high plant density and enclosed environments provide ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication and transmission of the fungal inoculum.
Clinical signs of the infection include the appearance of small, elliptical to irregular spots on the leaf blades. These spots are typically brownish with a distinct yellow halo. As the disease progresses, these lesions enlarge and coalesce, resulting in extensive tissue necrosis and eventual leaf death, which severely impacts the palm's health.
The development and spread of Bipolaris incurvata are highly dependent on high humidity and warm temperatures. These conditions stimulate spore production and germination.
