Description

The disease known as Bipolaris leaf spot is caused by the fungus Bipolaris iridis. This plant pathogen is a member of the dematiaceous hyphomycetes, known for attacking the foliage of various iris species. By disrupting leaf tissues, the fungus impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity and weakens its overall physiological health.

The primary hosts of this fungus are various cultivars within the genus Iris. In cases of high infestation, the pathogen can also affect flower stalks and, in some instances, the rhizomes, leading to severe damage or even the death of the plant if left untreated over multiple seasons.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown or tan-colored spots that rapidly expand into elongated, oval lesions. As the infection progresses, a characteristic olive-black velvet-like fungal growth (conidia) appears in the center of these spots, particularly under conditions of high ambient humidity.

Development and spread of the disease are highly favored by warm, humid weather and frequent precipitation. Spores are primarily dispersed via splashing rain, wind, and contaminated gardening tools. The fungus remains viable in infested plant debris, serving as the primary inoculum source for subsequent outbreaks.

To protect iris plantations, a combination of cultural and chemical practices is required. Cultural control involves removing and destroying infected foliage to reduce the inoculum level and spacing plants properly to ensure adequate airflow. Chemical control utilizes targeted fungicide applications, particularly during periods of high humidity and active growth.
