Description

Bipolaris yamadae is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing a specific form of brown spot disease in rice crops. As an ascomycete, this pathogen directly impacts the physiological processes of the plant by disrupting photosynthetic activity and nutrient transport, which ultimately leads to reduced yields and inferior grain quality.

The primary host of this pathogen is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). The disease targets various parts of the plant, including leaves, leaf sheaths, and the panicle. When the infection is severe, it results in the formation of lesions on the grain itself, which can significantly affect the crop's market value and its viability as seed for the following season.

Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or oval dark brown spots on the leaf blades. Under high humidity, these spots enlarge, often showing a yellow halo around the necrotic center. In advanced stages of infection, the leaves wither and dry out prematurely, leading to weakened plants and poor panicle development.

The development of Bipolaris yamadae is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. The fungus spreads via conidia dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and farm equipment. Soil-borne inoculum and infected seeds are the two main primary sources of infection in new rice fields.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for protecting the crop. Key practices include using resistant varieties, rigorous seed treatment with fungicides, and maintaining optimal soil fertility to avoid excessive nitrogen, which can make plants more susceptible. Furthermore, removing crop residues and practicing sound crop rotation are critical steps to interrupt the pathogen's life cycle.
