Description

The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Biscogniauxia anceps, which acts as a pathogen targeting the bark and cambium layers of woody plants. This fungus disrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to a significant decline in the plant's physiological health.

The pathogen primarily affects a wide range of broad-leaved tree species. It is particularly aggressive toward trees that have been compromised by environmental stressors, such as drought, frost damage, or mechanical injuries. When a tree's vigor is low, it becomes significantly more susceptible to the colonization of fungal hyphae.

Early symptoms include the formation of dark, sunken lesions on the bark, which can eventually enlarge and girdle the branch or trunk. As the disease progresses, the characteristic stromata of the fungus break through the bark, appearing as dark, crust-like structures. Foliage wilting and branch dieback are common consequences of these extensive necrotic lesions.

The development and spread of Biscogniauxia anceps are strongly influenced by favorable environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and warm temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects. Any break in the protective outer bark acts as an entry point for infection, making orchard and forest maintenance critical.

Management strategies focus on reducing inoculum load and enhancing tree resilience:

  • Regular sanitation pruning to remove infected wood.
  • Disinfecting pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Promoting tree health through adequate irrigation and nutrient management.
  • Monitoring and controlling insect populations that damage bark tissue.
