Description
Biscogniauxia mediterranea is a fungal pathogen responsible for the condition commonly known as charcoal disease or charcoal canker. It is an ascomycete fungus that behaves as an endophyte but turns pathogenic when the host tree is under physiological stress, leading to significant degradation of the woody tissues.
The primary hosts of this fungus are oak species, most notably the cork oak and downy oak. While it is predominantly found in Mediterranean climates, the pathogen is highly opportunistic and can affect other hardwood species if the environment becomes favorable for its development. The interaction between the tree and the fungus is largely dictated by the host's health status.
The most distinct symptoms of the infection include the formation of black, charcoal-like stromata on the bark surface, which break through the outer layers as the disease progresses. Infected trees often exhibit crown dieback, chlorosis of leaves, and structural failure of the bark. Once the fungus colonizes the cambium, it disrupts the flow of nutrients, leading to rapid decline.
Development and spread are strongly correlated with drought and heat stress. When trees are subjected to prolonged periods without adequate rainfall, their defensive mechanisms are weakened, allowing the fungus to transition from a dormant state to an active parasitic mode. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and sometimes through the activity of wood-boring insects.
Management strategies focus on silvicultural practices aimed at reducing host stress. This includes regular thinning to reduce competition for water, prompt removal of infected trees to lower the inoculum pressure, and protecting the bark from mechanical damage. Research into more resistant genotypes of oak is also ongoing as a long-term solution for forest restoration and health maintenance.
