Description

The fungus Biscogniauxia rosacearum is a pathogenic organism belonging to the order Xylariales. It acts as a specialized parasite that primarily attacks the bark and cambium layers of woody plants within the Rosaceae family. By colonizing the conductive tissues, the fungus disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, eventually leading to localized necrosis and potential tree death.

Common hosts for this pathogen include various pome and stone fruit trees, notably apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. The disease is frequently identified in older orchards or on trees that have been compromised by environmental stressors, such as frost cracks, drought, or poor management practices. Healthy trees with intact bark are generally more resistant to the initial stages of infection.

Symptoms often manifest as blackened, crusty stromata forming beneath the outer layers of the bark. As the disease progresses, the bark may peel or crack, exposing the dark, carbonaceous spore-bearing structures of the fungus.

  • Dark, flat, or cushion-like growths on the stems.
  • Premature leaf yellowing and foliage drop.

Spores are primarily dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or even human activity through contaminated pruning tools. Infection cycles are most aggressive during periods of mild, wet weather, which facilitate the entry of the fungus through existing wounds.

Preventative management is critical, as chemical eradication of an internal fungal infection is notoriously difficult. Orchardists should prioritize rigorous sanitation, which includes removing and destroying infected wood immediately. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and watering, combined with sealing pruning wounds with protective fungicides, remains the most effective strategy for preventing the establishment of this pathogen.
