Description
The smoky bracket (scientific name: Bjerkandera fumosa) is a destructive wood-decay fungus that belongs to the Polyporales order. It is primarily known as a pathogen that causes white rot, affecting both deciduous trees and some coniferous species by breaking down lignin and cellulose within the host tissue.
This fungus is frequently observed on a variety of hosts, including oak, willow, poplar, and various fruit trees in orchards. The pathogen typically establishes itself in trees that have sustained physical trauma, such as frost cracks, pruning wounds, or damage caused by maintenance equipment, which serves as an entry point for mycelium.
Diagnostic symptoms include the development of bracket-like fruiting bodies on the trunk or base of the tree. The upper surface of the fungus is generally smoky-gray or brownish, while the pore surface is initially white or cream, turning dark gray to black when bruised. Internally, the wood exhibits advanced white rot, often accompanied by distinct black demarcation lines.
The development of Bjerkandera fumosa is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed through the air and can colonize susceptible tissues throughout the growing season, especially in stands where tree vigor is already compromised.
The economic and ecological damage is significant, as the fungus weakens the structural integrity of the wood, leading to limb failure and overall tree mortality. To manage and prevent the spread of the disease, experts recommend:

- Immediately removing and disposing of infected woody debris.
