Description
Pea blight, caused by the fungus Fusicladium pisicola, is a significant fungal disease affecting pea cultivation globally. This pathogen specifically targets the foliage, stems, and pods, often leading to severe yield reductions in susceptible pea varieties if left unmanaged.
The impact of this disease is highly detrimental as it disrupts the plant's photosynthetic capacity. When infection is severe, the lesions can cause stems to collapse and pods to shrivel, leading to undersized seeds and a significant decline in the overall harvest quality and marketability.
Symptoms initially appear as small, dark brown or greyish spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and develop a distinct dark margin. Over time, the center of these lesions will display small, black, pin-head sized fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which are crucial for the spread of fungal spores.
The disease cycle is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. These conditions are ideal for the rapid production and dispersal of spores, allowing the infection to move quickly through the crop canopy during the growing season.
