Description
Bleaching necrosis is a non-infectious physiological disorder in plants primarily triggered by exposure to hazardous atmospheric pollutants, such as ozone or sulfur dioxide. Unlike fungal or bacterial diseases, this condition results from acute or chronic toxicity that damages the cellular structures of leaves, specifically affecting the gas exchange systems within the plant epidermis.
Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are particularly susceptible to this type of injury, making it a significant concern for greenhouse growers. The disorder typically occurs when pollutants, often generated by poorly maintained heating systems or internal combustion engines operating near the greenhouse, reach concentrations that the plant cannot metabolize, leading to localized cell death.
The primary clinical signs include the development of small, bleached, or cream-colored spots on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves. As the condition progresses, these lesions expand, often turning necrotic and causing the leaf tissue to lose its photosynthetic efficiency. In severe cases, the entire leaf may drop prematurely, causing significant damage to the plant's overall aesthetic and commercial value.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and severity of bleaching necrosis. High humidity levels, stagnant air, and significant fluctuations in temperature exacerbate the entry of pollutants through the stomata. Increased light intensity can further catalyze chemical reactions, making the plant tissue more vulnerable to the toxic impact of these air-borne agents.
Protective measures are essentially preventative and focus on environmental management within the cultivation area. Key strategies include:
- Regular maintenance and inspection of all heating and ventilation equipment.
- Eliminating potential sources of pollution, such as gas burners, from inside the plant space.
- Ensuring consistent and adequate ventilation to maintain fresh air circulation.
- Monitoring air quality using specialized sensors to detect pollutant threshold breaches early.
