Description
The causal agent of powdery mildew is the obligate biotroph fungus Blumeria graminis. This pathogen is a major threat to cereal production worldwide, specializing in grasses and cereal crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye. It remains on the surface of plant tissues, forming a feeding structure called a haustorium to absorb nutrients from the host.
The primary symptom is the appearance of white, cottony mycelium spots on leaves, stems, and leaf sheaths. These spots can expand and cover entire organs. As the infection progresses and the fungus matures, the mycelium turns grayish-brown, and tiny, black, spherical fruiting bodies known as chasmothecia appear within the fungal mat, marking the reproductive stage.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the spread of the disease. Blumeria graminis thrives in mild temperatures, typically between +15°C and +20°C, combined with high relative humidity. While free water on leaves is not required for spore germination, high humidity and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for rapid colonization and wind-borne dispersal of conidia.
The economic impact of powdery mildew is significant, particularly in high-yielding intensive farming systems. The infection reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant by covering the leaf surface and destroying the green tissue. This leads to reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, increased susceptibility to lodging, and significantly lower yields due to poor grain filling and grain size reduction.
Effective management requires an integrated approach that combines genetic resistance with good agricultural practices. Choosing resistant cultivars is the most sustainable strategy. Furthermore, farmers should avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which creates dense canopies that trap moisture. Chemical control using systemic fungicides is necessary when disease pressure reaches established economic thresholds.
