Blunt ear syndrome is a non-infectious physiological disorder in maize, primarily induced by severe abiotic stress, such as temperature fluctuations during critical growth stages. Unlike infectious diseases, this condition lacks a biological pathogen like a fungus or bacterium, representing instead a metabolic failure within the plant tissues during the transition to the reproductive phase.
Maize is the primary crop affected by this syndrome. The condition occurs when environmental factors interfere with the physiological programming of the ear development. This results in the plant failing to produce ears of normal size and structure, which significantly compromises the potential yield per hectare for the affected agricultural season.
The most prominent symptoms of blunt ear syndrome include a noticeably shortened ear shank and a blunt or truncated cob shape. Affected ears often display irregular kernel rows, incomplete grain fill, and delayed or asynchronous silking. In many cases, the ears remain stunted inside the husk, leading to significant difficulties during mechanical harvesting and reducing the overall grain quality.
The development of this syndrome is closely linked to sharp temperature spikes during the V6 to V10 leaf growth stages. Such thermal shocks disrupt the hormonal balance and the cell division process in the developing ear bud. Soil moisture stress, coupled with fluctuating temperatures, serves as an additional catalyst that exacerbates the physiological disruption within the plant anatomy.
The economic impact of this syndrome is significant, as it leads to irreversible yield losses and grain quality deterioration. Mitigation strategies involve selecting corn hybrids with high climate resilience and thermal stability.
