Boeremia crinicola (syn. Phoma crinicola) is a fungal pathogen responsible for Phoma leaf spot, a common and destructive disease affecting chrysanthemums. As a member of the Phoma family, this fungus specializes in invading plant tissues, leading to necrosis and significant degradation of the plant's structural integrity. It survives in soil, decaying plant matter, and infected nursery stock, making it a persistent threat in cultivation environments.
The primary host range includes various cultivars of Chrysanthemum, both garden varieties and those grown in controlled greenhouse environments. The fungus is capable of infecting all above-ground tissues, but leaves and stems are the most common sites of visible infection. Young plants are particularly susceptible, as the pathogen can rapidly colonize soft tissue under conducive environmental conditions.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of dark, irregular spots on the foliage. As the fungus progresses, these spots often expand, and their centers become necrotic. A distinctive feature of Boeremia crinicola is the presence of pycnidia—small, black, flask-shaped reproductive structures—visible to the naked eye on the surface of the lesions. These structures release spores that propagate the cycle of infection throughout the growing season.

Greenhouse settings that lack adequate ventilation and air movement create a stagnant microclimate that serves as an incubator for the rapid transmission of the disease between neighboring plants.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, particularly in commercial horticulture. Infected chrysanthemums suffer from stunted growth, leaf drop, and unattractive scarring, rendering them unsalable. Furthermore, if the infection reaches the stem, it can cause girdling and wilting, potentially killing the entire plant and leading to heavy losses if not controlled early in the disease cycle.
