Description
Boeremia gilvescens is a fungal plant pathogen responsible for Phoma rot, a damaging disease primarily affecting solanaceous crops such as tomatoes and potatoes. It causes significant physiological stress to host plants, manifesting as necrotic tissue lesions that disrupt the transport of water and nutrients.
The primary clinical signs of the disease include the formation of dark, sunken lesions on the stems, particularly near the soil line. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, often encircling the stem and leading to the plant's wilting and sudden collapse. Closer inspection reveals numerous pycnidia—small black fruiting bodies—embedded within the infected lesions.
Development of the disease is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. The pathogen persists in soil, plant debris, and infected seeds, allowing it to survive between growing seasons and initiate new infections as soon as environmental conditions become conducive for fungal development.
The harmful impact of this disease is significant, as it results in substantial reductions in yield and marketable quality. Infected fruit development is often stunted or destroyed by secondary rot, leading to considerable economic losses for farmers, particularly in high-density greenhouse environments where moisture levels are harder to control.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Growers should focus on sanitation, including the removal and destruction of crop residues. Crop rotation remains a critical preventive measure to break the pathogen's life cycle. Additionally, applying registered systemic fungicides and managing greenhouse humidity can effectively suppress the spread of the infection during the growing season.
