Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Boeremia sambuci-nigrae (formerly classified as a species of Phoma or Ascochyta), which acts as a specialized pathogen. It primarily targets Sambucus nigra, exploiting the plant's leaf and shoot tissues to complete its life cycle.
This fungal pathogen manifests as foliar lesions, significantly affecting the aesthetic and physiological health of the elderberry bush. While typically restricted to foliage, severe infections may extend to tender stems, particularly when environmental conditions favor the pathogen's rapid growth.
The visual symptoms appear as localized necrotic spots on the leaf surface. These spots are usually brown to grey in color and often feature a darker margin. Upon close inspection, minute black dots, known as pycnidia, can be observed within the necrotic tissue, serving as reproductive structures for the fungus.
Epidemiology of the disease is closely tied to humidity levels and rainfall. High atmospheric humidity and frequent rain events facilitate the dispersal of conidia via water splash and wind. Areas with poor air circulation within the shrub canopy are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing rapid disease progression.
The impact of this disease includes premature defoliation and a weakening of the host plant. By interrupting the photosynthetic activity, the fungus reduces the overall vigor of the plant, which can lead to reduced flowering and fruit production, as well as stunted growth in younger specimens.
Integrated management and control practices include:
- Strict sanitation by removing and disposing of infected plant material and fallen leaves.
- Pruning techniques to ensure better light penetration and airflow through the canopy.
- Maintaining plant vigor through appropriate irrigation and nutrient management.
