Unlike typical herbaceous plant pathogens, these organisms primarily function as facultative parasites or saprotrophs, targeting the root systems and wood tissues of weakened trees. As basidiomycetes, they are responsible for degrading the internal structure of the plant host through the formation of rot.

The primary hosts affected by this pathogen include various deciduous tree species, particularly poplars and willows. These fungi are frequently identified in parklands, forest plantations, and residential gardens where specific environmental conditions favor fungal growth. The pathogen can colonize both weakened living trees and decaying wood, such as stumps, which act as reservoirs for further infection of neighboring healthy trees.

Key symptoms of the infection include the emergence of fruiting bodies at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots. Internally, the disease is characterized by the development of brown rot, which strips the wood of its mechanical strength, making it brittle and soft. Externally, the affected trees exhibit signs of decline, such as yellowing of leaves, wilting, and a significant reduction in annual shoot growth due to impaired nutrient uptake.

The development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on soil moisture levels and the presence of physical injuries to the bark or root collar. Warm, humid conditions accelerate spore germination and mycelial expansion. Dissemination occurs primarily through wind-dispersed spores or water splash, as well as through direct root contact between trees in dense plantations, allowing the fungus to spread underground.

The economic and ecological damage caused by Boletinellus involves the premature senescence of trees and the potential for structural failure, posing safety risks. Effective control measures and prevention strategies include maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, minimizing mechanical damage during cultivation, and performing regular site sanitation. Removing infected stumps and pruning affected parts are essential to reduce the inoculum density and protect the surrounding landscape.
