The biological nature of this association is ectomycorrhiza. The mycelium of the fungus forms a sheath around the root tips of the host plant, facilitating nutrient exchange. Unlike a pathogen, which damages cells, this fungus provides the tree with essential minerals, water, and protection against soil-borne stressors, effectively acting as an extension of the root system.

The primary host for this fungus is the birch tree (genus Betula). The colonization occurs through the fine feeder roots, where the fungus and the tree exchange metabolites. This relationship is particularly important for young trees, which often rely on the fungal network to obtain enough phosphorus and nitrogen to survive in competitive environments.

Development conditions for this fungus require stable soil humidity and organic matter availability. The fungus thrives in forest floors with moderate acidity. The spread of the fungus occurs via spores, which are disseminated by wind, water, or small animals. Once the spores germinate, the hyphae seek out suitable root tips to initiate the mycorrhizal colonization process.

There are no control measures or plant protection strategies required, as the birch bolete is not a plant disease but a key component of forest vitality.
