The fragrant bolete (Boletus fragrans) is a mushroom species within the Boletaceae family. It is strictly not a plant pathogen or a disease; rather, it is a beneficial mycorrhizal fungus that forms symbiotic relationships with the root systems of various broad-leaved trees, such as oak and beech.
In forestry and arboriculture, this fungus is considered a positive indicator of soil health and forest vitality. By forming mycorrhizal networks, the mycelium aids the host tree in absorbing essential nutrients, minerals, and moisture, thereby strengthening the tree against environmental stressors.
There are no symptoms of disease or parasitic damage associated with this fungus. The fungus does not invade or destroy plant tissue; instead, it exists in a mutualistic exchange, providing nutrients to the tree in exchange for carbohydrates produced by the tree through photosynthesis.
