The order Boliniales consists of a group of Ascomycetes fungi known for their presence in woody habitats. While many species within this order are primarily wood-decaying saprotrophs, their ability to colonize living tissue under stressful conditions makes them relevant to plant pathology. These fungi act as opportunists, targeting weakened trees and shrubs, which can lead to significant structural and physiological issues.

The disease mechanism involves the penetration of fungal mycelium into the host plant's cambium and wood tissue. As the pathogen matures, it develops distinctive stromatic structures that rupture the host's bark. This type of infection is usually categorized as a wood necrosis or canker disease, which interferes with the plant's nutrient and water transport systems, eventually leading to localized cell death.

This group of fungi affects a variety of broadleaf and coniferous species. Commercial orchards, forest plantations, and urban trees are susceptible, especially when they have been subjected to wounds caused by pruning, storms, or pest infestation.
