Bombardia (lat. Bombardia) is a genus of fungi classified within the Sordariomycetes class. While primarily known for their role as decomposers of organic matter, several species are recognized in plant pathology for their potential to infect weakened or environmentally stressed host plants, acting as opportunistic pathogens.

The causal agent involves fungal species that form perithecia, which are small, flask-shaped fruiting bodies. These structures allow the fungus to release spores that disseminate throughout the field. The infection type is typically characterized by localized tissue necrosis, as the fungus colonizes the plant through wounds or stressed physiological sites.

Host crops include various ornamental plants, vegetable species, and specific cereal crops. Signs of infection include necrotic lesions on stems or leaves, often accompanied by the emergence of black, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies that indicate the pathogen has reached its reproductive phase on the host tissue.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental humidity and the presence of crop debris. High levels of moisture, combined with temperatures conducive to fungal growth, facilitate the germination of ascospores. Poor sanitation, such as failing to remove infected plant matter, significantly increases the pressure of the disease within the cropping season.

The harmful impact of this pathogen includes the reduced vigor of the host plant, premature senescence of foliage, and potential yield losses in vegetable crops. Furthermore, the infection can compromise the vascular system of the plant, leading to decreased nutrient uptake and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by other microbial agents.
