Description
Bondarzewia is a genus of wood-decay fungi, best known for causing significant root and butt rot in coniferous trees. As a pathogen, it primarily targets the heartwood and root systems, leading to structural instability of the affected trees and long-term damage to the forest ecosystem.
The fungus predominantly affects species such as spruce (Picea) and fir (Abies). It is typically found in mature or old-growth forests, where the pathogen can persist for decades in the root systems of infected stumps and woody debris, slowly spreading to healthy, adjacent trees through root-to-root contact.
The primary symptoms of Bondarzewia infection are the appearance of large, rosette-like basidiocarps (fruiting bodies) at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots during the growing season. Internally, the disease manifests as white pocket rot, characterized by the decay of wood fibers, leaving the roots brittle and significantly weakened.

Management and prevention focus on minimizing root damage during forest operations and the removal of highly infected trees to break the cycle of infection. Maintaining tree species diversity and preventing the accumulation of large woody debris can also help decrease the spread of the pathogen, protecting younger trees from initial colonization.
