Bondarzewia montana is a significant wood-decay fungus that acts as the pathogen responsible for butt and root rot in various conifer species. As a parasitic organism, it infiltrates the host tree through injuries to the root system or the root collar, gradually destroying the structural integrity of the wood and leading to tree decline.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are firs and spruces, though it can occasionally infect other coniferous trees. Once established, the mycelium of the fungus penetrates deep into the heartwood, breaking down cellulose and lignin, which effectively starves the tree and compromises its stability.
Symptoms of the infection include the formation of a mottled, white-pocket rot within the root system and the lower bole of the tree. A definitive diagnostic feature is the emergence of large, fan-shaped, yellowish-brown fruiting bodies at the base of the infected tree. These clusters are often quite prominent during the late summer and autumn seasons.
