Description

The Bondarzewiaceae family consists of wood-decaying basidiomycete fungi that play a significant role in forest ecology and pathology. The most notable species, Bondarzewia mesenterica, acts as a primary pathogen causing white butt rot, severely impacting the structural integrity of coniferous timber stands.

This fungus typically attacks coniferous species such as spruce, fir, and hemlock. Infection usually begins through root grafts or wounds located near the base of the tree trunk. Once established, the mycelium spreads through the heartwood, consuming essential structural components like lignin and cellulose, which weakens the tree from within.

Visual symptoms include the formation of white rot, where the wood becomes fibrous, bleached, and soft. Advanced stages of decay result in hollowed stems, making trees highly susceptible to windfall and breakage during severe weather events. In some cases, fruiting bodies of the fungus may appear at the base of the host tree.

The development of Bondarzewiaceae is favored by moist site conditions, lack of soil aeration, and the presence of logging injuries. Spores are disseminated via wind or water, while vegetative spread occurs through direct contact between healthy and diseased root systems, leading to the formation of infection centers in forest stands.

Managing infections caused by these fungi is challenging, as the disease is often systemic. Recommended protection and preventive measures include:

  • Implementing strict sanitation harvesting to remove infected logs and stumps.
  • Minimizing logging damage to residual tree bases and root systems.
  • Maintaining optimal soil health and drainage to reduce tree stress.
  • Promoting species diversity to limit the rapid spread of host-specific fungal pathogens.
