Botrydium is a genus of yellow-green algae that frequently colonizes damp soil surfaces in agricultural environments. While it is not a direct plant pathogen in the traditional sense, its presence is a significant indicator of poor soil management, high humidity, and improper irrigation practices that can impede crop development.

The organism is characterized by the formation of microscopic, bubble-like structures that aggregate to form a thin, crusty layer on the soil surface. This layer significantly restricts soil aeration and water infiltration, creating a physical barrier that can cause suffocation of young root systems and limit nutrient uptake in seedlings.

Greenhouse environments and nurseries are the primary areas affected by this organism. Crops such as vegetables, ornamental flowers, and containerized nursery stock are most susceptible when grown under conditions of excessive moisture and poor air circulation, which favor the proliferation of these algae.

The development of Botrydium is triggered by specific environmental factors, including stagnant surface water, high light intensity on moist soil, and high soil salinity or acidity. Once established, the algae reproduce via zoospores, which can easily be spread throughout a facility via irrigation water or contaminated tools.

Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach focused on sanitation and environmental control. Key protective measures include:

  • Ensuring proper drainage to prevent water accumulation on the soil surface.
  • Increasing airflow and ventilation in greenhouses to reduce surface humidity.
  • Regular cultivation and stirring of the topsoil to disrupt algal growth.
  • Correcting soil pH and minimizing excessive fertilization that fuels rapid growth.
