Botryobasidium blight is a fungal disease caused by various species of the genus Botryobasidium. It is recognized as a soil-borne pathogen that primarily affects the lower stems and root systems of plants. The disease typically manifests as a localized rot, leading to necrosis and decay of plant tissues under high-moisture conditions.

This pathogen impacts a wide range of vegetable, ornamental, and greenhouse crops. Seedlings are particularly susceptible, as their soft tissues offer little resistance to the rapid colonization by the fungal mycelium. The disease can be particularly devastating in hydroponic setups or container gardens where stagnant moisture creates an ideal habitat for the fungus.

The visual symptoms often include a distinctive white or light-colored web-like mycelial growth near the soil line. As the infection progresses, the stems become soft, mushy, and discolored. Eventually, the vascular system is compromised, which leads to sudden wilting, chlorosis, and the total collapse of the plant structure.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Botryobasidium spread. The fungus thrives in high humidity (above 85%) and poor airflow environments, which prevent the soil surface and plant base from drying out. Fluctuating temperatures and over-saturation of the rooting medium further aggravate the susceptibility of the crop to infection.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this blight, as chemical options can be limited.
