Description
Botryobasidium blight is a fungal disease caused by the basidiomycete fungus Botryobasidium conspersum. This pathogen is typically associated with soil-borne fungi that can act as opportunistic parasites on weakened or stressed crops. It primarily affects the basal parts of plant stems, causing localized tissue damage through the development of mycelial mats.
The fungus has a broad host range, impacting various ornamental plants, vegetable seedlings, and nursery stock. It is particularly problematic in protected cultivation environments such as greenhouses, where high humidity and limited airflow create ideal conditions for its proliferation. Once established, the fungus can persist in soil and debris for extended periods.
Symptoms of an infection include the appearance of thin, white to grayish cobweb-like mycelium covering the base of the stem near the soil line. Infected tissues may exhibit softening or discoloration, leading to stunted growth, nutrient uptake interference, and in severe cases, plant wilt. Unlike aggressive pathogens, this fungus often creates a gradual decline in plant health rather than sudden collapse.
Environmental conditions are the primary driver of development for Botryobasidium conspersum. High humidity levels, poor soil drainage, and lack of air circulation are the key factors promoting the growth of the fungus. Optimal development occurs at moderate temperatures (18–25°C) and consistent moisture, which are common in poorly managed greenhouse environments.
Management and control strategies focus on sanitation and environmental modification. Reducing soil moisture, improving ventilation, and maintaining appropriate plant spacing are critical for preventing outbreaks. If infection levels warrant it, fungicides labeled for soil-borne fungal pathogens should be applied. Proper sterilization of growing media and removing infected crop debris are essential for long-term prevention.
