Apple botryoconiosis is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Botryoconis saccardoi. This fungus primarily targets the foliage of apple trees, leading to premature leaf senescence and a decline in the overall vigor of the tree, which can significantly impact fruit development.
The primary host for this pathogen is the domestic apple tree. The disease thrives in regions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures during the summer months. It is particularly problematic in dense orchards where poor air circulation prevents the rapid evaporation of moisture from the leaves.
Symptoms initially appear as small chlorotic or brown spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, eventually turning into necrotic lesions. Severe cases result in leaf curling, yellowing, and significant defoliation, which inhibits the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as rainfall and high moisture levels. Conidia are disseminated through wind, rain splashes, and insect movement. The pathogen survives the winter in fallen infected leaves, which serve as the primary source of inoculum for the next growing season.
