Description
Botryodiplodia palm disease is a fungal infection caused by the pathogen Botryodiplodia palmarum. This fungus is known for infecting various palm tree species, leading to severe tissue degradation, wilting, and in advanced stages, the death of the apical bud or the entire palm tree.
The disease primarily affects ornamental and commercially grown palms, such as coconut and date palms. The pathogen is opportunistic, typically entering the host plant through wounds caused by improper pruning, insect damage, or environmental stressors such as hail or wind, which create entry points for fungal spores to colonize the interior vascular system.
Key symptoms include the appearance of localized necrotic lesions that eventually turn dark brown or black. As the disease spreads, the affected foliage may show chlorosis and necrosis. The presence of small, black, erumpent pycnidia on the stems or petioles is a diagnostic feature used to identify the presence of the fungus in the field.
The development and proliferation of Botryodiplodia palmarum are heavily dependent on climatic factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. In such environments, the fungus can rapidly produce spores, which are then disseminated by water splash and air movement, spreading the infection to adjacent plants.
Control strategies should focus on strict phytosanitary measures, including the immediate removal and destruction of infected fronds and tissue. Applying protective copper-based fungicides to pruning wounds is essential to block the entry of spores. Maintaining overall plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation helps the palm resist initial infection.
