Botryohypochnus is a significant fungal pathogen classified within the group of basidiomycetes, responsible for causing root and stem rot in various agricultural and horticultural crops. This pathogen is primarily soil-borne, making it a persistent threat in fields with poor drainage or intensive cropping history.
The disease primarily targets the roots, crown, and lower stems of affected plants. Once the mycelium of Botryohypochnus colonizes the plant tissue, it effectively disrupts the xylem and phloem transport, which manifests as systemic wilting and eventual necrosis of the plant's vascular system.
Common symptoms include the formation of dark, water-soaked lesions near the soil line and the appearance of a characteristic white or grayish fungal web on the stem surface. In later stages, the tissue becomes soft and crumbly, and the plant often collapses or shows severe stunting of growth.
Environmental conditions such as high relative humidity, persistent soil moisture, and moderate temperatures provide the ideal climate for the fungus to spread. Poor field sanitation, such as leaving infected crop residue in the soil, acts as a primary reservoir for the survival of the fungus through cold or dry seasons.
Management strategies focus on a holistic approach: improving field drainage, strictly maintaining crop rotation intervals, and utilizing solarization or fungicide treatments where necessary.
