The causative agent of oak canker is the ascomycete fungus known as Botryosphaeria quercuum. This pathogen is responsible for a serious bark necrosis disease that primarily targets trees weakened by environmental stressors such as drought, frost, or poor soil conditions.

Various oak species, particularly those within the Quercus genus, are susceptible to this infection. The disease affects both young saplings and mature trees, posing a significant threat to forest ecosystems, urban landscaping, and decorative park plantations.

Symptoms typically include localized areas of bark discoloration followed by sunken necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the bark may crack, and the underlying wood begins to decay.
