Description

The fungus Botryosporium longibrachiatum is the causative agent of a specific type of mold rot. This pathogen typically functions as a facultative parasite, meaning it thrives primarily on decaying organic matter but can rapidly transition to active infection on living tissues when the host plant is stressed or mechanically damaged.

The disease primarily impacts greenhouse-grown crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers. It is particularly problematic in dense canopy conditions where air circulation is restricted and the microclimate remains consistently humid, creating an ideal environment for fungal colonization.

The primary sign of infection is the development of a white, felt-like mycelial growth on affected surfaces, which later develops branched conidiophores. As the disease progresses, the infected plant tissue undergoes rapid decomposition, turning mushy and discolored. The presence of these branched structures often gives the infected area a distinctive fluffy appearance.

Environmental conditions are critical for the spread of Botryosporium longibrachiatum. High ambient humidity (over 85%) and temperatures between 18°C and 22°C are optimal for spore production and mycelial extension. The spores are easily dispersed through the air and can colonize new hosts through stomata or wounds.

Mitigation strategies focus on environmental control and hygiene to limit the pathogen's impact:

  • Ensure proper ventilation to maintain humidity levels below critical thresholds.
  • Remove and destroy any plant debris or infected organs to prevent sporulation.
  • Avoid over-densification of crops to improve airflow within the greenhouse.
  • Apply preventative fungicides specifically labeled for greenhouse use when environmental conditions are conducive to the disease.
