Description
Botryotinia is a genus of ascomycetous fungi recognized as a major phytopathogen in global agriculture. Most commonly associated with the grey mold disease (anamorph Botrytis cinerea), this fungus utilizes a necrotrophic strategy, meaning it kills host tissues to derive nutrients, leading to rapid tissue decay and structural collapse.
The host range of Botryotinia is remarkably broad, encompassing hundreds of species. Economically significant crops such as grapes, strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes, and various ornamental flowers are highly susceptible to infection, which can occur at any stage from seedling growth to post-harvest storage.
Primary symptoms include the development of soft, water-soaked lesions that eventually become covered with a dense, greyish, fuzzy mass of mycelium and spores. As the infection progresses, the pathogen produces black, compact resting bodies known as sclerotia, which allow the fungus to survive in soil or on plant debris for extended periods.
Environmental conditions are critical for the development of Botryotinia. It thrives in cool, humid climates where free moisture is present on plant surfaces for prolonged periods. Poor air circulation in greenhouse environments and high plant density significantly increase the risk of rapid disease outbreaks and secondary infections.
Management of this pathogen requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include improving sanitation practices by removing infested plant material, optimizing plant spacing to enhance airflow, reducing humidity, and timely application of site-specific fungicides to protect vulnerable plant parts during critical growth phases.
