Description

Chocolate spot is a widespread fungal disease caused by Botrytis fabae, a pathogen that poses a significant threat to faba bean cultivation worldwide. This fungus is highly specialized and thrives in specific environmental conditions, leading to rapid development of disease outbreaks within a field if not controlled in time.

The primary host plant is the broad bean or faba bean (Vicia faba). The fungus colonizes all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, flowers, and developing pods. Under favorable conditions, the infection can spread throughout the canopy, causing severe defoliation and leading to substantial yield losses in both seed quantity and quality.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of small, reddish-brown circular spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and darken into a deep chocolate color. In high humidity environments, the necrotic areas become covered in a grey, velvety fungal mass consisting of spores. When the attack is severe, the lesions can cause leaves to wilt, turn black, and drop prematurely.

Development and dissemination of Botrytis fabae are highly dependent on high moisture levels and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. The pathogen survives between seasons in infested soil debris and on contaminated seeds. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and contact with contaminated agricultural machinery or workers.

The impact of this disease on crop productivity is significant. By destroying the leaf tissue, the fungus reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which leads to flower abortion and pod senescence. In extreme cases, a severe infection can cause the entire crop to collapse, resulting in harvest failure. Managing this disease is crucial for economic sustainability in legume production.

  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle in the soil.
