Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Botrytis galanthina, a highly specialized pathogen targeting the genus Galanthus. This fungus invades plant tissues, utilizing enzymes to degrade cellular structures, which leads to the characteristic symptoms of necrosis and decay.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are snowdrops. While other bulbous species might exhibit incidental symptoms, Botrytis galanthina is notoriously specific to snowdrops, often leading to rapid population decline in gardens where the pathogen has been introduced through infected bulbs or contaminated soil.
Symptoms typically appear early in the growing season, starting as water-soaked spots on leaves that rapidly turn into brown or gray lesions. Under conditions of high humidity, a dense, fuzzy gray mold develops over the surface of the infected areas. If left unchecked, the fungus progresses downward into the bulb, causing it to rot and eventually form black resting structures called sclerotia.
Environmental conditions are critical for the outbreak of gray mold. Periods of cool, wet weather combined with poor air circulation within the planting area create an ideal environment for spore germination and mycelial spread. The pathogen persists in the soil or decaying plant debris, ready to infect emerging shoots during the following season.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to sanitation and chemical control. Growers should prioritize the immediate removal and destruction of infected plants to prevent the buildup of sclerotia in the soil. Furthermore, using preventative fungicide treatments during early spring and ensuring adequate spacing between bulbs are essential strategies for maintaining a healthy display of snowdrops.
