Hyacinth botrytis is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Botrytis hyacinthi. This fungus primarily targets bulbous plants, leading to severe deterioration of the plant tissues and potential crop failure if not managed correctly in the early stages.
The disease primarily affects hyacinths, especially when they are grown in conditions with poor airflow or high humidity. It can attack the bulbs both during the storage phase and after they have been planted in the ground, making it a persistent challenge for gardeners and commercial growers alike.
Symptoms typically manifest as yellowish or brown spots on the leaves and stalks, which expand rapidly as the infection progresses. In humid conditions, a characteristic grey, fuzzy mold develops on the affected areas. As the fungus infiltrates the bulb, it causes soft rot, resulting in a distinct odor and the total decay of the plant structure.
The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as excessive soil moisture and poor ventilation. The fungus can persist in the soil and on plant debris as sclerotia, which act as a reservoir for infection in subsequent seasons. Spores are easily spread via wind, splashing water, and contaminated gardening tools.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical practices:

- Ensuring excellent soil drainage to prevent waterlogged conditions.
