Description
Botrytis lanea is a pathogenic fungus that functions as a necrotrophic parasite, causing significant damage to various plant species. As a member of the Botrytis genus, it primarily causes grey mold disease, characterized by the rapid degradation of plant tissues. Its ability to secrete complex enzymes allows it to penetrate host cells and extract nutrients efficiently, leading to tissue necrosis.
The fungus has a broad host range, primarily targeting ornamental flowers, horticultural crops, and various greenhouse-grown vegetables. It typically attacks the above-ground parts of the plant, such as stems, leaves, flower buds, and fruits. During vulnerable stages of development, such as post-harvest or peak flowering, the susceptibility of the plant to infection increases significantly.
Typical symptoms of infection include water-soaked lesions that quickly develop into grey, velvety mycelial mats. These mats are masses of conidia, which are easily detached and spread by wind, water splashes, or physical contact. As the disease progresses, the infected area softens and collapses, often leading to secondary infections or the total loss of the plant structure.
Environmental conditions are crucial for the establishment and spread of the disease. High relative humidity (usually exceeding 85%) combined with moderate temperatures creates an ideal environment for spore germination. Poor air circulation in high-density plantings or greenhouses exacerbates the situation, allowing the fungus to colonize rapidly and cause severe economic losses.
Managing Botrytis lanea requires an integrated approach to minimize moisture and eliminate sources of the pathogen:
- Improve ventilation and air circulation to reduce humidity levels around plant foliage.
- Practice strict sanitation by removing and destroying all infected plant debris.
- Apply preventative fungicides based on the specific crop and disease pressure.
- Avoid overhead irrigation to keep the plant surfaces dry and reduce spore transfer.
