Peony botrytis blight is a devastating fungal disease caused by the pathogen Botrytis paeoniae. This fungus is host-specific to peonies, causing significant damage during cool and wet weather conditions. The pathogen survives the winter in the soil and on plant debris as small black structures called sclerotia, which act as the primary inoculum for the next growing season.

Symptoms typically appear in the early spring, manifesting as sudden wilting and browning of young shoots. The base of the stems becomes soft and decayed, often covered in a fuzzy gray mass of fungal spores. If the infection persists, it spreads to the developing buds, turning them black and preventing them from opening, a condition often referred to as "bud blast." Leaves may also develop large, irregular brown necrotic patches.

The spread of the disease is heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly high humidity and persistent rain. These conditions are ideal for spore production and dispersal via wind or water splash. Cultural practices such as overcrowding, poor site drainage, and excessive nitrogen fertilization also increase the vulnerability of the plants, as lush, soft tissues are more susceptible to fungal penetration.

The economic and aesthetic impact of the disease is profound, as it severely weakens the root system and prevents the plants from producing blooms. If left untreated, chronic infections can lead to the death of the crown. Because the fungus resides in the soil, the infection can recur annually, creating a cycle of decay that is difficult to break without active management and sanitation.

Control strategies should focus on reducing environmental stress and utilizing chemical intervention when necessary. Good sanitation is the cornerstone of prevention, as removing infected material breaks the disease cycle. Recommended actions include:

  • Prompt removal and destruction of all diseased plant parts.
  • Improving air circulation through proper plant spacing.
  • Applying fungicides during the period of shoot emergence and bud development.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep the foliage as dry as possible.
