Description
Tulip fire, caused by the pathogenic fungus Botrytis tulipae, is the most significant disease affecting tulip cultivation globally. This specialized fungus specifically targets tulip plants, causing systemic infections that degrade plant health and cause widespread damage to both commercial bulb production and home gardens.
The primary host for this fungus is the tulip species. Botrytis tulipae is highly invasive, attacking all parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, flowers, and most importantly, the bulbs. This ensures the pathogen persists through the seasons, overwintering in the soil or within infected bulb tissues.
Symptoms initially appear as small, tan-colored spots on the foliage that quickly expand and develop a fuzzy grey layer of fungal spores. Infected flower buds often fail to open and may appear scorched or twisted. Bulbs infected with the disease exhibit dark, depressed lesions, often accompanied by black, mustard-seed-sized structures known as sclerotia.
Disease development is heavily favored by cool, wet weather conditions, typically during the spring growth phase. The fungus thrives in high humidity, and its spores are easily dispersed by rain splashes, wind, and garden tools, particularly in crowded planting beds that lack adequate air circulation and sunlight exposure.
The impact of Tulip fire is severe, resulting in significant yield losses and potential destruction of entire flower displays. Effective management requires an integrated approach, starting with selecting disease-free bulbs, maintaining crop rotation, ensuring proper plant spacing for airflow, and applying registered fungicides when environmental conditions are conducive to fungal activity.

- Removing and destroying infected plant debris immediately.
- Improving soil drainage to prevent excessive moisture accumulation.
