The mud puffball (lat. Bovista limosa) is a rare species of gasteromycete fungi which, in an agronomic context, is classified as a soil saprotroph that can exhibit pathogenic properties under specific conditions. The causative agent belongs to the Agaricaceae family and develops small fruiting bodies directly on the soil surface or among decaying organic plant debris.

This fungus primarily affects sod-podzolic and floodplain soils where high humidity levels coincide with abundant organic content. In agricultural settings, it can negatively impact the development of root systems in vegetable seedlings and young grain sprouts, particularly in greenhouse environments or waterlogged fields, competing with crops for vital soil nutrients.

The main symptoms of infestation include stunted plant growth, yellowing of lower leaves, and the appearance of a white or grayish mycelial coating in the root zone. In severe cases of fungal spread, inhibition of the root system occurs, leaving the plant susceptible to secondary bacterial infections and various types of rots.

Conditions for the development of the mud puffball are directly linked to high soil moisture, lack of aeration, and poor crop rotation practices. Active sporulation occurs during periods of prolonged rainfall or excessive irrigation, when the top layer of soil becomes compacted, creating a favorable environment for spore germination and the development of new fruiting bodies.

Protection measures include strict monitoring of soil moisture, improving drainage systems, and regular inter-row cultivation to prevent water stagnation. Essential prevention steps involve disinfecting the soil before planting, utilizing high-quality seeds, and maintaining optimal plant density, which significantly reduces the risk of spreading soil-borne pathogens across the field.
