Bovista paludosa is a fungus from the Agaricaceae family that, while primarily a saprotroph, can negatively impact agricultural crops in specific moisture-rich soil environments. Its presence is often a marker of poor drainage or waterlogging, which can cause significant stress to cultivated plants and facilitate the development of root-related pathologies.

The pathogen thrives in anaerobic conditions typical of marshy or water-saturated soils. It causes root rot, a disease characterized by the systemic decay of the underground parts of plants. By colonizing the root zone, the fungus interferes with nutrient uptake and water absorption, leading to progressive wilting and potential plant death if left unmanaged.

Crops such as forage grasses, cereals, and certain vegetable species grown on reclaimed peatlands are the most susceptible. The fungus exploits weakened root systems, particularly in conditions where lack of oxygen prevents the plants from maintaining strong immune responses against fungal colonization.
