Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Breviappendix rubi, which is categorized as an ascomycete. It acts as a specialized parasite that targets the aerial parts of plants belonging to the Rosaceae family. This pathogen disrupts the cellular integrity of the host, leading to physiological stress and significant reduction in plant productivity over time.

The primary host for this fungus is the raspberry (Rubus idaeus). While it may occasionally be found on wild blackberry species, the cultivated raspberry is most susceptible to infection. The pathogen primarily colonizes stems and foliage, but in severe cases, it can invade reproductive buds, causing stunted growth and preventing the successful development of berries.

Typical symptoms include the development of small, chlorotic spots on leaves that progressively darken into necrotic lesions with distinct margins. Infected canes often show patches of discolored, brittle tissue which eventually crack. These cracks weaken the structural integrity of the canes, making them highly susceptible to breaking during strong winds or under the weight of fruit.

The development of Breviappendix rubi is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind, rain splashes, and contact with contaminated gardening equipment. Densely planted fields with poor air circulation create a conducive microclimate for the rapid spread of the fungus during the growing season.
