Description
The Broomeiaceae family comprises a specialized group of gasteromycetes that can manifest as opportunistic pathogens in plant tissues. As fungal agents, they develop unique fruiting bodies often associated with root systems or organic-rich soil substrates, which can lead to metabolic stress and structural damage in host plants.
These fungi primarily affect woody plants, perennial shrubs, and forest species, though in agricultural settings, they may impact nursery stocks and orchards. The pathogen targets the root crown and basal sections of the stems, utilizing nutrients from the host and inhibiting the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals from the soil.
Key symptoms of an infestation include the visible development of fungal fruiting structures at the base of the plant, decay of the bark, and necrosis of the root collar. Infected plants typically display signs of wilting, premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a general decline in overall health, which may eventually progress to total necrosis of the root system.

Fungal spores and mycelium thrive in conditions where poor aeration occurs, allowing the pathogen to colonize new host tissues efficiently during the growing season.
