Broomella is a genus of ascomycetous fungi responsible for various necrotic diseases in plants. As a pathogenic fungus, it primarily targets foliage and young stems, causing significant stress to the host plant by disrupting vital physiological processes like photosynthesis and nutrient transport.

This pathogen affects a range of woody plants, shrubs, and ornamental species. It frequently survives on infected plant debris, including fallen leaves and twigs, which serve as an overwintering reservoir. This makes the sanitation of the growing environment a critical factor in managing the disease cycle.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as irregular spots on leaves, which gradually darken and become necrotic. As the disease progresses, the fungal fruiting bodies, known as ascomata, break through the leaf epidermis, appearing as small dark pustules. Prolonged periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures create an optimal environment for spore germination and colonization of plant tissue. Rain splash and wind are the primary mechanisms for dispersing spores within a plantation.

The impact of this disease is significant, leading to reduced plant vigor, aesthetic damage, and, in severe cases, dieback of branches. Control measures involve a combination of chemical and cultural practices. It is crucial to remove and destroy diseased plant material during the dormant season to reduce inoculum levels and apply appropriate fungicides during the growing season to protect healthy tissue.
