Browning is a significant fungal disease affecting flax (Linum usitatissimum), caused by the fungus Aureobasidium lini. This pathogen is known for its ability to compromise the structural integrity of the plant and degrade the quality of both fiber and seeds, leading to substantial economic losses in flax-growing regions.
The primary host for this pathogen is Linseed (flax). The infection affects all aerial parts of the crop, including the stems, leaves, and seed bolls. Understanding the life cycle of the pathogen is essential for managing the disease, as it can persist in plant debris and soil for extended periods.
Clinical symptoms of browning include the emergence of distinct brown or dark spots on the tissues of the plant. Under favorable conditions, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to severe leaf blight and stem lesions.
