Description

Buellia is a genus of crustose lichens belonging to the family Physciaceae. In an agronomic context, Buellia is not a pathogenic organism that causes active disease or necrosis in plant tissues. Instead, it functions as an epiphyte, using the bark of trees or woody stems as a stable substrate for its development while interacting minimally with the host's internal physiology.

It is commonly found on various species of fruit and ornamental trees, particularly those that are mature or neglected. Older, thicker bark provides the crevices and moisture retention necessary for the lichen to establish its thallus. It is especially prevalent in orchards where maintenance practices like pruning and bark cleaning have been overlooked for several seasons.

The visual signs of Buellia include the appearance of thin, crust-like growths on the bark surface. These growths can have a granular or warty texture, often appearing as grey, white, or greenish-grey patches. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of numerous small, black, disk-like apothecia, which appear as tiny dots scattered across the surface of the lichen.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Buellia spread. The lichen thrives in high-humidity environments, sheltered locations with poor air circulation, and areas with low atmospheric pollution. Dense, unpruned tree canopies provide the perfect microclimate, reducing evaporation and allowing the lichen to colonize large sections of the trunk and primary branches.

While not a direct parasite, the presence of heavy Buellia colonization can be detrimental to tree health. Dense crusts can potentially obstruct the lenticels, which are essential for bark gas exchange. Furthermore, the micro-habitats created by the lichen provide ideal hiding spots for overwintering pests such as scale insects, mites, and fungal pathogens, which can then exploit the tree during the growing season.

Management and prevention focus on maintaining tree vigor and environmental hygiene. Key strategies include:

  • Regular pruning to improve sunlight penetration and air circulation throughout the canopy.
  • Mechanical removal of dead or loose bark using soft wire brushes or scrapers to limit available colonization sites.
  • Applying agricultural lime wash or copper-based treatments to the trunks to create an unfavorable surface for lichen attachment.
  • Ensuring proper plant nutrition to boost the tree's natural resilience.
