Buellia subdisciformis is a crustose lichen belonging to the Physciaceae family. It is strictly an epiphytic organism, meaning it uses the surface of tree bark, rocks, or other stable substrates for anchorage rather than as a source of nutrition. Consequently, it is not considered a plant pathogen, as it does not invade or damage living plant tissues.
This species is commonly found on the trunks and branches of various deciduous and coniferous trees. Its distribution is largely dictated by environmental factors such as air humidity, light intensity, and the age of the tree. The lichen prefers habitats where moisture remains on the bark surface for extended periods, facilitating its growth through symbiotic interactions between fungi and algae.
The visual symptoms of colonization by Buellia subdisciformis are characterized by the appearance of thin, crust-like patches. These patches can be grayish, whitish, or pale yellow, often having a granular texture. Unlike pathogenic fungi, these crusts can typically be scraped off without leaving lesions or necrotic spots on the underlying bark tissue.
The development of this lichen is most rapid on older, stagnant trees where the bark growth rate has slowed down significantly. Increased humidity and poor airflow within the canopy create ideal conditions for its proliferation. Because lichens require a relatively stable and non-toxic environment, their presence is often observed in orchards with lower levels of chemical pesticide use and cleaner ambient air.
While Buellia subdisciformis is generally harmless to healthy trees, heavy colonization may provide shelter for pests such as scale insects or mites. Good orchard management, including thinning of the canopy and the physical removal of lichen crusts during dormant pruning seasons, helps maintain tree vigor and prevents the accumulation of excessive epiphytic growth on the stems.
