It is distinguished from other powdery mildew fungi by the unique morphological features of its chasmothecia, specifically the bulb-shaped appendages that facilitate its identification.

This fungus typically targets species within the Fagaceae family, with oaks (Quercus spp.) being the most frequent hosts. In horticultural and forestry settings, the infection can be problematic for nursery stock and ornamental trees, often leading to reduced vigor and aesthetic degradation of the foliage during the growing season.

The primary symptom of Bulbouncinula bulbosa is the appearance of white, mycelial patches on leaves and occasionally on young shoots. As the fungal colony expands, the leaf tissue underneath may discolor, curl, or become distorted. By late summer, small dark structures representing the sexual stage of the fungus develop within the mycelial mats.
